Snake hooks (India)
Snake hooks are a tool for field herpetologists, rescuers, and enthusiasts for catching or handling (venomous) snakes for various reasons. Do NOT try to catch or handle snakes without proper training. Don’t unnecessarily risk your’s and others’ lives, and give the defensive snake (that may bite you) a bad name.
Please also note that all Indian snakes are protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (amended 2006). You must have proper permissions and approvals (from local forest department) before handling snakes.
Follow safety protocols at all times. Make sure you have proper training is safe handling of venomous snakes before you attempt to catch one. Here are some important documents that you can refer:
Collapsible big hook | Perfect for urban rescuers and field herpetologists
Aluminium alloy shaft and stainless steel hook – 24 inches when retracted, 42 inches when extended.
Mini hook (For saw-scaled vipers, small pit vipers and young ones of other species)
Snake bagger is a special equipment used for quick and safe bagging of snakes, especially venomous snakes. Most handlers struggle during bagging process, trying to set up the ‘open’ mouth of the bag for the snake to enter. The manual process greatly compromises safety of the handler and others, specially when the freshly caught snake is freaked out and is constantly trying to escape. The bagger on the other hand makes this job very easy and safe.
The bagger has a bag attached to the triangular frame keeping the mouth comfortably open for the snake to enter with ease.
These bags are available separately. It is important to understand that this method works well if the bag doesn’t carry stress pheromones from a previously rescued snake. If you are a active snake rescuer, you will need to keep several cloth bags (for rotational use), and keep washing them after rescues. Otherwise, snakes will not enter willingly.
